Humanities community

This multifaceted community aggregates scholars, researchers, data scientists, and educators working together to apply digital technologies and data management techniques to various disciplines within the humanities. ... In the PARTHENOS EU Project D4Science services and capacity were exploited to strengthening the cohesion of research in the broad sector of Linguistic Studies, Humanities, Cultural Heritage, History, Archaeology and related fields by aggregating resources. In the context of the ARIADNEplus project ... With the GNA initiative the community was enlarged with key actors supporting the development of the Italian National Geoportal for Archeology, an authoritative access point of data resulting from archaeological investigations conducted in Italian territory.

R&D Field of Science

The humanities community faces significant research challenges, including the heterogeneous nature of data, which ranges from textual archives and historical documents to archaeological finds and cultural artifacts. This diversity requires the development of flexible tools and methods capable of handling different formats and data types.

Another significant challenge is ensuring data interoperability, to enable the integration of resources from diverse sources and facilitate collaborative, interdisciplinary research.

The community must also address the need to provide contextualized access to resources, linking information to specific geographical locations, historical periods, or cultural contexts. Moreover, a key focus is ensuring the long-term preservation and accessibility of cultural heritage, necessitating robust solutions for data archiving, management, and sharing.

D4Science tackles these challenges by offering a centralized platform for integrating varied resources, supporting standard data formats and metadata, and providing a collaborative workspace.

D4Science added value / role

D4Science offers several key advantages to the humanities community.
The platform provides Virtual Research Environments (VREs) that can be tailored to specific research projects, offering access to a wide range of resources, tools, and services. These VREs enable collaborative research by providing shared workspaces where researchers can discuss their work, exchange data and methods, and co-develop research strategies.

D4Science's data integration and accessibility features allow scholars to combine various types of data, from archaeological datasets to historical archives, enhancing the scope of their research.

The platform's analytical tools support advanced data exploration and visualization, enabling researchers to identify patterns, assess site significance, and make informed decisions about cultural heritage.

Through its Data Publishing Framework, D4Science facilitates the creation of comprehensive, standardised, and validated data that are essential for conducting robust scientific research and developing reliable predictive models.

The infrastructure ensures the long-term preservation of resources, promoting transparency and reproducibility of results. Additionally, the platform's focus on open science practices fosters knowledge sharing and enhances the impact of research on cultural heritage management and digital humanities.

ARIADNEPlus Gateway

The ARIADNEplus Project builds on the ARIADNE results, extending and supporting the research community that the previous project created and further developing the relationships with key stakeholders such as the most important European archaeological associations, researchers, heritage professionals, national heritage agencies and so on. The ARIADNEPlus Gateway helps the project to develop a data infrastructure embedded in a cloud that offer the availability of Virtual Research Environments where data-based archaeological research may be carried out.

D4GNA Gateway
D4GNA Gateway

D4GNA primarily hosts datasets related to archaeological research projects carried out under ministerial concession by the Italian Ministry (Articles 88-89 of Legislative Decree 42/2004, Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape) by universities, research institutions, and other institutional entities in Italy. However, it is also set up to receive and display datasets produced by Italian archaeological missions abroad.

Based on the Semantic Web standards for building digital libraries, the Hypermedia Dante Network (HDN) project aims to establish a collaborative environment for a commentary of Dante?s works, with due attention paid to issues of language, style and intertextuality. Using reliable primary sources, the HDN aims at creating a digital library that will cater to a broad range of sophisticated queries, thanks to the use of ontology-based resource descriptions that allow reusing knowledge about existing resources.
