A team of researchers from different disciplines – climate science, ecology, and economics – is collaborating on a project to assess the impact of climate change on coastal communities.

Collaboration

D4Science fosters a collaborative research environment by facilitating communication, data sharing, and joint development of analytical workflows among researchers within and across institutions.

Challenge to solve

The project requires the integration of diverse data sources, complex models, and analytical workflows.

How D4Science supports the user story

D4Science provides the team with a collaborative environment that supports the entire research lifecycle, from data integration to knowledge dissemination.

  • The team can establish a shared VRE that provides a secure workspace for data storage, analysis, and communication. The StorageHub service offers scalable storage for the team’s large datasets, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
  • Researchers can utilize the Cloud Computing platform to develop and execute complex workflows, integrating their own algorithms or leveraging existing ones from the D4Science catalogue. The CCP provides the computational power needed to run resource-intensive analyses.
  • The VRE’s social networking and communication tools keep the team connected, fostering seamless collaboration and knowledge sharing. Researchers can discuss their findings, share insights, and refine their analytical approaches iteratively.
  • As the project evolves and new challenges emerge, the team can leverage D4Science to incubate new developments. They can explore novel analytical techniques using JupyterLab and RStudio environments within their VRE. They can encapsulate new algorithms as web services using the CCP and contribute them to the D4Science Catalogue, expanding the platform’s resources and fostering open science practices.
