Activity organisation

Overall strategy and general description

The objectives of the project will be achieved through the synergetic operation of Networking, Service, and Joint Research Activities. The overall objective of the Networking Activities (NA) is to serve the needs of the Environmental Monitoring and Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Management communities. The experience done with these large communities will facilitate a future extension of the e-Infrastructure capabilities to other scientific communities. This will be done by: disseminating the project outcomes, training of the various players, and exploiting and collecting feedback to the D4Science e-Infrastructure through the implementation of the communities VREs.

The Service Activities (SA) aims at making available and maintaining a stable, reliable and usable e-Infrastructure to these (and possible other) D4Science user communities.

Finally, the Joint Research Activities (JRA) address the technical requirements raised by the Environmental Monitoring and Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Management communities against the gCube framework.

These three activities are organised in cooperating work packages whose interaction is depicted in the D4Science activity organisation figure.

The following work packages hold a critical role in linking the three activity areas of the project:

  • NA2 Scientific and Technological Coordination; this work package organises the scientific and technical activities of the project and supervises the project across all the activities by coordinating interactions, monitoring the time schedule and recommending appropriate actions;
  • NA5 Communities VREs Definition, Validation and Exploitation; this work package defines community applications requirements and produces feedback resulting from the exploitation of the D4Science e-Infrastructure and related facilities. These requirements and feedback are collected by the SA1, SA2 and JRA1 work packages that are in charge to deal with them;
  • SA1 Infrastructure Operation; this work package takes care of the feedback resulting from the usage of the D4Science e-Infrastructure and puts in place the needed actions to guarantee an operational e-Infrastructure, e.g. new site installation;
  • SA2 Community Specific Operations; this work package deals with those aspects of the requirements and feedback that imply infrastructural configuration and operation, e.g. assign resources to specific application contexts;
  • JRA1 Overall Planning and Development Coordination; this work package takes care of the aspects related to software consolidation and development, i.e. this work package identifies and put in place the technical activities needed to meet the user communities’ expectations. These technical activities are implemented by JRA2, JRA3, and JRA4 work packages.
